Breaking Silences Toolkit
As part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program, WAVES Founder & Executive Director Jian (Lily) Chen, along with professional partners Juliana Chen, Justin Chen, and Weiyang Xie, completed the project “Breaking Silences in the Model Minority: A National Intervention to Increase Mental Health Awareness and Decrease Stigma in Asian Immigrant Families.” Through this initiative, the team developed and launched an educational toolkit for Asian American parents.
The toolkit centers youth voices, builds foundational mental health knowledge, strengthens communication skills, and promotes self-compassion. Designed specifically for Asian American families, it offers culturally tailored guidance on effective communication, balancing traditional values with modern parenting, and navigating common challenges—empowering families with practical strategies to build lasting, meaningful connections.

EmbraceRace Toolkit
Explore a practical resource designed to help caregivers raise thoughtful, confident, and racially aware Asian American children. This parent FAQ guide offers clear, accessible answers to common questions about identity, race, and navigating conversations with kids about culture and discrimination.
Grounded in lived experience and research, the resource includes developmentally appropriate strategies for talking about race without fear, affirming cultural pride, and fostering open parent-child dialogue. Whether you’re unpacking concepts like race and ethnicity, guiding your child through experiences of bias, or simply looking for language to support healthy self-understanding, this toolkit equips families with thoughtful tools to strengthen connection and build resilience.
