April is Autism Awareness Month, and in honor of that, we wanted to share a little bit about the intersection between autism and mental health. Here’s five fast facts to know:

3️⃣ Masking can take a serious toll on mental health.

Many autistic individuals engage in “masking”—suppressing or hiding autistic traits to fit in socially. While this can help navigate certain environments, it’s often exhausting and can lead to burnout, increased anxiety, and identity confusion.

4️⃣ Sensory sensitivities can significantly impact mental health.

Many autistic individuals experience heightened or reduced sensitivity to stimuli like sound, light, touch, or crowds. Environments that feel overwhelming or unpredictable can lead to chronic stress, anxiety, and exhaustion.

5️⃣ Late diagnosis can impact self-esteem and mental health.

Many individuals—especially women and people of color—are diagnosed later in life. Years of feeling “different” without understanding why can lead to low self-worth, misdiagnosis, and untreated mental health needs.
