October is OCD Awareness Month

October is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Awareness Month. While we’re all familiar with the acronym…how much does the general public really understand the disorder?💭

The disorder, characterized by recurring, uncontrollable thoughts (obsessions), and/or repetitive, excessive behaviors (compulsions), affects an estimated 2–3 million adults in the U.S. according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Though unfortunately, many go years without proper diagnosis or treatment.

Misrepresentation in media and casual language often oversimplify or distort the experience, but OCD is not just about habits or preferences. It’s a cycle of intrusive thoughts, fears, and compulsions that can be extremely debilitating. That’s why awareness and education matters.

Every conversation that replaces misconception with compassion helps create space for understanding. While there is no cure for OCD, there’s a number of treatments available that can drastically improve quality of life, as well as several organizations specifically dedicated to dispelling the stigma surrounding OCD through research and advocacy, and serving those affected by the disorder by offering competent care, resources and safe spaces🩵
