UCA WAVES Successfully Hosts the First In-Person YMHFA Aid Training for CSAUS

On February 15th, Chunying Zhao, a Mental Health First Aid trainer of UCA WAVES, invited by the Chinese School Association in the United States (CSAUS), successfully conducted the first in-person Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) training during the Winter Teacher Workshop in Las Vegas.

During the training, the instructor, using real-life case studies, provided a clear and in-depth explanation on identifying youth mental health signs and symptoms, communication skills, and crisis intervention strategies. The participating teachers engaged in group discussions and interactive activities. They shared and discussed the mental health challenges faced by youth in their communities, as well as the responsibilities of Chinese schools, as vital cultural and educational organizations within the Chinese community, to promote students’ mental health. Many attendees found the training was highly beneficial, and expressed confidence that the knowledge and skills acquired would greatly support their future work within Chinese school communities. They also pledged to encourage more colleagues and parents to participate in this training.

Since April 2024, UCA WAVES has partnered with CSAUS to successfully conduct five online Mental Health First Aid training sessions and this in-person training, cumulatively training over 140 participants. This series of training activities has effectively enhanced the mental health literacy of Chinese school educators, providing strong support for building healthier American Chinese communities.

As a professional organization dedicated to improving mental health within the American Chinese community, UCA WAVES’ Mental Health First Aid training program is not only open to the general public but also offers customized training for various organizations. Organizations in need are welcome to contact us via email at coordinator@ucawaves.org to jointly support and expand community mental health initiatives.
