In the wake of Hurricane Helene, UCA WAVES partnered with 25 local Chinese organizations to launch the Western North Carolina Disaster Relief Initiative, a collaborative effort aimed at providing vital assistance to communities in western North Carolina.
Hurricane Helene, which struck on September 26th, caused significant damage in affected regions. Helene sent residents scrambling to cope with threats like floods and landslides. Tens of thousands of North Carolina residents remained without running water on October 2nd, six days after Hurricane Helene slammed into Florida and carved a destructive path through much of the U.S. Southeast, killing more than 180 people. The powerful storm inundated the western part of the state with catastrophic flooding, destroying pipes, damaging water plants and cutting off power.
Together, 26 local Chinese organizations, including UCA WAVES, mobilized resources and volunteers to deliver food, supplies, and shelter to those affected by the storm. Through fundraising efforts and community outreach, these organizations not only offered immediate relief but also fostered a spirit of solidarity among diverse groups. Their collaborative approach highlighted the importance of unity in the face of natural disasters, ensuring that vulnerable populations received the support they needed during a challenging time.
